C. Jere Birds in Flight Wall Sculpture

This classic modernist C. Jere “Birds in Flight” wall sculpture is the perfect addition to any midcentury-themed decor. The instantly recognizable Jere design is made of welded steel and has its original brass finish. It measures a 58″ wide by 22″ high by 9″ deep and is signed “© C. Jere 1968” on one wingtip. The sculpture is in good vintage condition with only the expected minor wear to its finish. It has been given a light dusting only in order to preserve the patina of age it gained over the years taking flight majestically in someone’s stylishly appointed mid-mod home.

About the Artist

Often taken for the signature of an individual artist, “C. Jere” is actually the collective nom de plume of artist Jerry Fels and his partner Kurt Frieler. In 1964 the pair launched Artisan House, with which the C. Jere signature is associated, following the loss of their successful costume jewelry business to an explosion. From the beginning, the new company made the most of Fels’ unique artistic abilities and Frieler’s remarkable facility with tools and manufacturing processes. With the aim of creating “gallery-quality art for the masses,” they set to work producing some of the most artistically adventurous, funky and memorable household decor of the mid-20th century. Table sculpture, mirrors, lighting and wall sculpture, were all skillfully produced by Artisan House workers in a range of materials under Frieler’s direction. Fels oversaw the creative direction of the company and provided designs, using Pop, Minimalism and Brutalism as stylistic touchpoints. Of all Artisan House creations, none are more engaging and memorable than their hallmark metal wall sculptures. Made in both representational and abstract modes, the sculptures are notable for their inventive forms and skillful finishing, and for best attaining the desired look of individually crafted works of art. Long disregarded as kitsch and relegated to the deepest recesses of attics and basements, Artisan House work, all of which bears the C. Jere signature, has made a striking comeback, especially in the area of sculpture, where examples are sought after by collectors and often fetch prices in the thousands of dollars.
