Description

This striking silver pendant is the work of iconic Danish designer Henning Koppel for Georg Jensen. The modernist design dates from 1967 and is representative of the fluid, organic forms that made Koppel one of the foremost silver artists of his time. It measures 1-3/4″ high by 1-34″ wide by approximately 5/16″ deep and is in excellent vintage condition, with no scratches, dents or other defects. It is stamped on the back with the appropriate post-1945 Georg Jensen hallmarks and “368,” the Jensen design number. Included is a 24″ sterling silver Figaro chain, which, while not original to the pendant, is quite complementary to its design.

About the Artist

In many respects, Henning Koppel is responsible for “Danish design” as we understand it today. Educated as a painter and a sculptor, he came to international fame as a silver smith. Employed by Georg Jensen in 1946, he developed his artistic vision through masterworks of design in silver hollowware, jewelry and flatware. Bucking artistic trends of the time, Koppel considered himself an anti-functionalist and was committed to the ideal of making everyday items into beautiful, as well as useful, objects. While much of Koppel’s work in silver may appear uncomplicated, he in fact pushed his media and the artisans who crafted it to their limits. Koppel, who died in 1981, won a number of prestigious awards in his lifetime but what endures is his unwavering focus on aesthetics over functional considerations and the fluid, organic forms in his work, which remain as appealing and relevant today as the day they were conceived.
