Description
This modernist sterling silver bracelet is the work of renowned designer Andreas Mikkelsen and dates from the 1970’s, during a period when he produced work for his own company, A/M Design. A straightforward silver rod with two endcaps suspended between lengths of sterling chain, reminiscent of utilitarian steel chain, and simple toggle clasp make up the bracelet. The effect is minimalist and somewhat “industrial,” in keeping with other of Mikkelsen’s austere and often witty designs. The bracelet weighs a substantial 42.5 grams and measures 8″ in total length. It is stamped “A. Mik,” “Denmark,” “925S” and “16 A.” It is in excellent vintage condition.
About the Artist:
Although destined to become an acclaimed designer, Andreas Mikkelsen first prepared for a career in business by attending the Niels Brock School in Copenhagen and Copenhagen Business School before taking a job as a sales manager for Georg Jensen in 1963. His first seven years saw him progress beyond business aspects of the silversmithy, however, and in 1970 he went on to establish his own design company, A/M Design. There, he developed his own jewelry for a number of years before returning to Georg Jensen Company, where he became the artistic director in 1983. Mikkelsen later continued his career in London, designing jewelry and watches both for A/M and Georg Jensen. In 1992 Mikkelsen was awarded both the Kaj Bojesen Prize and the Design Plus Award. He died in 2008 at the age of 79.
