Description

This highly collectible modernist sculpture is by noted artist Louis Von Koelnau. Executed in red-tinted clear lucite, the sculpture employs a minimalist approach to depict the figure of a seated bear, with added visual interest created by an etched front surface contrasting with a polished surface on the balance of the piece. The sculpture is signed by the artist on the underside, dated 1989 and numbered 104 of 200. It measures 13-1/4” high by 10” wide by 8-1/2” deep and is in excellent condition, with only a very few light surface scratches near the base toward the rear.

About the Artist

Louis Red von Koelnau (1924 – 2015) graduated the Minneapolis College of Art & Design before continuing his education at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, Sweden, where we was awarded a Master of Arts with honors. Following his service in WWII, he returned to Minneapolis where he enjoyed a long, successful career as a sculptor. Working strictly in polyresin, von Koelnau is known for both purely abstract modernist forms and his signature minimalist renderings of bears in various poses. Perhaps foreshadowing his widely collected bear sculptures, von Koelnau is credited with designing, while still a student, the ubiquitous bear-shaped honey bottles still sold in grocery stores today.
