Description
This dazzling set of six Culver glasses features a rare raised sunburst pattern overlaid in 22k gold with 1/4″ gold bands decorating their top and bottom edges. Each glass is signed “Culver” in 22k gold script, dating the production from the late 1950’s to mid 1960’s. The glasses appear to have been seldom used, and are in very good vintage condition with only slight wear to the gold. They measure 5-1/2″ tall by 2-3/4″ in diameter. Considered collectible from the time they were made, these handsome glasses would make a spot-on addition to any collection of better mid-mod decorative wares.
About the Maker
Founded in New York, NY by Abe Rothenberg, Culver Glass began producing highly collectible glassware in 1939 and continued a tradition of high regard and exceptional quality for several decades. While early production included many techniques, such as sandblasting, hand-painting, sand-cut monogramming and silk screening (among others) Culver Glass is perhaps best known for its lavish use of real 22-karat gold decoration, which began in the late 1950’s. Applied using a super-heated roll on process that remains a secret today, the various patterns that embellish Culver glassware are emblematic of midcentury modern design, while their materials and craftsmanship literally set the gold standard for collectible glassware of the period.
